چکیده

The onset processes of the zonally asymmetric anomalies of convection and sea surface temperature (SST) over the tropical Indian Ocean are investigated with considering seasonal evolution, and interannual variability, of the large-scale convection anomalies in the Asian summer monsoon, using outgoing longwave radiation (OLR), SST, and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data. This asymmetric pattern of the convection anomalies is particularly dominated in boreal autumn. Some recent studies have noted that these anomalies, based on the atmosphere-ocean coupling phenomenon, can be developed and main-

Impacts of Indo-Pacific Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies on the Summer Monsoon Circulation and Heavy Precipitation over Northwest India–Pakistan Region during 2010

Quite a few studies have documented the evolution of monsoon synoptic systems and midlatitude atmospheric blocking associated with the recent heavy precipitation and floods over northwest Pakistan during 2010. This period also witnessed a very unusual Indo-Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) evolution with a strong La Niña event in the Pacific, substantial Indian Ocean warming, and a negative...

Onset of the Summer Monsoon over the Indochina Peninsula: Climatology and Interannual Variations*

The temporal and spatial structures of the atmospheric circulation associated with the climatology and interannual variations of the summer monsoon onset over the Indochina Peninsula were studied using the observed daily rainfall at 30 stations and the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis from 1951 to 1996. The climatological monsoon onset over Indochina is on 9 May, with a standard deviation of 12 days. The m...

Seasonally Evolving Dominant Interannual Variability Modes of East Asian Climate*

A season-reliant empirical orthogonal function (S-EOF) analysis is applied to seasonal mean precipitation over East Asia for the period of 1979–2004. The first two dominant modes account for 44% of the total interannual variance, corresponding to post-ENSO and ENSO turnabout years, respectively. The first mode indicates that in El Niño decaying summer, an anomalous anticyclone appears over the ...

Remote and Local SST Forcing in Shaping Asian-Australian Monsoon Anomalies

The most striking feature of the Asian-Australian monsoon associated with the El Niño teleconnection is the evolution of anomalous anticyclones over the western North Pacific (WNP) and southeast Indian Ocean (SIO). In this study we investigated the relative role of remote and local SST forcing in shaping the monsoon anomalies with an atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM). Four idealized ...

How can we understand the global distribution of the solar cycle signal on the Earth’s surface?

To understand solar cycle signals on the Earth’s surface and identify the physical mechanisms responsible, surface 10 temperature variations from observations as well as climate model data are analyzed to characterize their spatial structure. The solar signal in the annual mean surface temperature is characterized by i) mid-latitude warming and ii) no overall tropical warming. The mid-latitude ...
